Awesome-ology Summer Camp Overview

A Typical Day at Origins Montana Awesome-ology Summer Camp

Campers start each day the same. Drop-off time is from 8:30am-9am, and during this supervised time campers are free to play and explore. We will also offer games and other activities for campers to play. Campers are free to bring breakfast and snacks for this period, too!

Once all campers have arrived, we will have a “tailgate session” to give campers a rundown of the day’s activities and hand out necessary materials for the day, such as field notebooks, maps, and other supplies relevant to the fieldwork and field trips on the schedule. As the week goes on, tailgate sessions will evolve so campers can review and discuss activities and discoveries from prior days and share their favorite experiences so far.

From there, each day at camp is unique. One day, campers will hike up Mount Jumbo to learn about the ancient history of the Missoula Valley. Another day, campers will study maps and satellite images and may learn how to make their own maps. When possible, campers will learn how to observe and assess artifacts, ecofacts, and the landscape and will be challenged to think about cultural heritage stewardship for future generations. Wherever we go amid the backdrop of Missoula, each day will present new and memorable experiences for campers, including considerations of Indigenous relationships with the land and insights from urban archaeology.

We will break for snacks, water refills, and lunch at appropriate times throughout the day and request that campers bring their own lunch and water bottle for each day. Parents should also include a list of any food allergies and any necessary medications their child needs on the registration form. Additionally, origins may provide snacks at certain times throughout the week and we would like to accommodate all dietary needs.

As the day winds down and we return to the meeting site, wrapping up each day as we started, pausing to ask campers to reflect and share observations about the day’s adventures. Following that, we will finish with a game or activity until campers are picked up. Each camp will end at 3 pm, but pick-up time will span 3:00-3:30 pm, with games and other activities offered during this time.
