Butte and Silver Bow County have an incredible history in our region and our country. Nearly 100 years ago, just after World War I, Butte was the richest city in America and was looked to as a model for success and prosperity; “a world class copper producer” (National Register of Historic places 2006). Since those times Butte has experienced ups and downs, and these swings have, usually, been associated with the legacy of mineral extraction this county (Silver Bow County) is so famous for.
In nearby German Gulch, an 1870 census noted two “Chinese men” lived there. However, recent archaeological evidence suggests there were probably hundreds of Chinese in German Gulch at that time. In this day of the tour, you will explore the Chinese legacy in Butte Montana and nearby German Gulch, near the Fairmont Hot Springs and Anaconda, Montana.
